Maybe, instead, they have minds that are not really so different after all. But as countless careful experiments like this study of pigs reveal ever more about the inner world of animals, there comes a point where it looks far more contrived to suppose that their behaviour just happens to look like ours in all kinds of ways while differing utterly in its explanation. If other animals behave like us, that’s no basis to assume that they do so for the same reasons and with the same experiences and mental representations of the world. To grant animals “minds” in any meaningful sense was to indulge a crude anthropomorphism that had no place in science.

To René Descartes in the 17th century, and to behavioural psychologist BF Skinner in the 1950s, other animals were stimulus-response mechanisms that could be trained but lacked an inner life. Feelings and emotions, hope and pain and a sense of self were deemed attributes that separated us from the rest of the living world. Until rather recently, philosophers and scientists have been reluctant to grant a mind to any nonhuman entity. Objectively, there’s no reason to suppose that it feels like anything: that there is “something it is like” to be a pig, whether apparently happy or gloomy. You need to understand why the metrics you measure matter and visualize everything that helps you get and act on feedback faster.Īs Patterson continues its DevOps Culture Journey, they are looking to continue to find more and better tooling, continuously evaluate and adjust, and automate all the things! If you were unable to attend the meeting, you can view the slide deck here.We don’t, and probably never can, know what it feels like to be an optimistic pig. It’s critical to have the tools in place to allow for transparency on progress.

Patterson built dashboards to bring visibility to the health of the sprint, test failures, and what’s remaining for a sprint. They have seen a huge mental shift as everyone owns quality and own their pipeline. Their culture is now more collaborative they follow the fail fast – fix fast mentality, and more trust throughout the teams. A few other things they incorporated were implementing tools to encourage ownership and self-service, big room release planning, and daily sprint health check-ins.Īs Patterson has continued through their journey, they have seen a shift in their teams to agile methodology, becoming more autonomous, and monthly deploys. They also emphasized culture-related training including strengths training, scrum training, and promoted camera usage and video conferencing. They focused on re-organizing teams to be autonomous. They hired an Agile Coach, product owners for each team, and they hired a consultant to migrate from TFS to Azure DevOps. The put a high focus on hiring and team changes. In terms of culture, they faced some blaming, non-trusting, and some “not my problem” mentality. They faced separation of roles, multi-location, infrastructure deploying code, some continuous integration, and non- agile methodology. Fuse offers a cloud-based Dental Practice Management Product, which needed to be able to respond quickly to customer requests including bugs or enhancements.Īt the beginning of their DevOps Culture, they struggled the most with culture, teams, and tools.
